It seemed that Josephine had timed her dinner preparations very well. Half way though making the pie, she also reminded Heather to start preparing the drinks.

Heather pulled the package from the wheeled shopping bag.

How could she have forgotten to take it out and check?

Since Josephine was ruling in the kitchen, Heather pulled on an apron and took the box outside to open it. All the key ingredients were there: aged Jamaica dark rum and Campari. She ventured back to the kitchen, grabbed her shaker from the cupboard, a bottle of simple syrup prepared earlier, a carton of pineapple juice and a bottle of lime juice from the pantry. She arranged the ingredients on the table under the sail roof. All she needed now was three glasses, and a tray of ice cubes. She mixed the drinks and planned to serve them over ice once James arrived.

Shortly before 6 pm, James' tall figure appeared on the path leading from the bay.

Heather wiped her hands on her apron and waved at him. It was the perfect moment to add ice to the glasses and pour in the cocktail.

She hurried back inside with the bottles, deposited them on the side cabinet and headed for the freezer.

"James is nearly here, the cocktails are done," Heather said to Josephine. "Are you joining us on the terrace?"

Josephine bent to check the oven.

"Perfect timing. The pie will be ready in about twenty minutes. The salad is in the fridge," Josephine straightened. "Let's take some nibbles from the pantry and grab a seat outside. I'm dying to know if he's found out anything new."

"So am I," Heather replied, collecting a packet of nuts and a box of salted pretzels from the pantry. She took two small bowls and filled them with the snacks.

The cat flap clicked, and Kea trotted into the kitchen, meowing loudly.

"What's happened, little fella?" Josephine cooed. "Has he brought his big dog?"

"Meow," the cat replied, tilting his cute head and staring at Josephine through his large, green eyes.

"He's telling fibs, your little Kea," Heather said. "I didn't see Axel. I think that sneaky cat is trying to convince you to give him extra food for comfort. And before you ask, yes, I saw Kea wolfing down the content of that bowl. If he tells you anything different-"

"Oh, it looks like Miss Heather doesn't agree with your view," Josephine said to the cat, who just kept staring at her. "Are you sure you're hungry?"

The kitten meowed again.

Josephine patted the cat and shuffled toward his empty bowl. She picked it up and rinsed it out.

"Go and meet your, I mean, our guest, Heather. I'll feed Kea and join you in a tick. "

Heather stepped outside, carrying a tray of ice and the snacks.

She was right on time. James was approaching the steps leading onto the terrace.

"Evening, Heather. You look good in that apron," he commented with a glimmer of appreciation in his eyes. "Is that the new uniform?"

Heather's cheeks burned. She undid the ties and removed the embarrassing apron.
